Well, this little sweetheart came in the mail today. I dunno what it is, I'm a bit of a sucker for pink taisho houmongi... I think it's the bold patterns they have on them. And who can resist such a pretty thing for $30?
Houmongi are kimono that can be worn by both married and unmarried women. So this, while not the most formal kimono for married women, it is the most elabourate style of kimono that a married woman would wear. Generally houmongi rank in the semi-formal range. This particular one is actually rather informal because it only has one crest and that crest is embroidered on. Dyed crests are considered more formal than embroidered ones. Anyways, this kimono has beautiful autumnal motifs. Lots of chrysanthemums and falling leaves. Meanwhile the fabric, with its woven pattern of running water says goodbye to the summer months and the occassional dyed plum blossom reminds us to look ahead towards winter.
