Description

Stand #12:

BLACK CRESTED FURISODE
Like other crested furisode, black based crested furisode are also hard to come by these days. Right around the time of the world wars, however, they were commonly worn as wedding dresses. The black base and crests made them highly formal and the bold patterns made them suitably striking for a bride to wear. Black based furisode like this often had a matching red, or white based furisode which would have been worn underneath during the wedding ceremony.

This particular kimono is likely from the early to mid Showa era (1926-1989), quite likely right around the world wars. The peacocks on it were once outlined in gold embroidery, but it had fallen into disrepair and the embroidery was removed to preserve the appearance of the kimono.
