Stand #10:

WEDDING FURISODE
(kakeshita or honfurisode)

Sometimes referred to with terms such as susohiki or hikizuri (literally translated as "trail the skirt" ), the wedding furisode belongs to a family of kimono which are meant to be worn trailing on the ground. You can tell by the unusual length and padded hem. Please note that the words hikizuri and susohiki refer to the way in which the kimono is worn (trailing), not the type of kimono itself. These words often cause confusion for new kimono enthusiasts.

Wedding furisode are typically considered the most elabourate furisode a woman would wear in her life. It is also the last furisode she’ll wear in her life, since after marriage it would no longer be acceptable for her to wear such flambouyant clothing.

Historically, white has been considered the colour of death in Eastern religions and therefore was not associated with weddings. As a result, wedding furisode are usually brightly coloured. Due to Western infulences, however, it has become common to wear white for one’s wedding. So it is quite easy to find Japanese wedding ensembles that are entirely white as well. These white ensembles are referred to as shiromuku. Nowadays, it is common for women to wear a shiromuku ensemble for their wedding ceremony and then change into the colourful ensemble for the reception.
