Misora - Beautiful Sky

Time for some Okinawan style!

This is the kimono I completed over the last couple of days. It's got a beautiful faux bingata print on it. Bingata is a style of fabric dying that originated in Okinawa, Japan. The kimono from that region are famous for their bold designs and vivid colours.

I purchased the fabric a while ago for about $30. It's synthetic and so I decided it would be best to leave this kimono unlined. Especially since the juban I have to match it is synthetic as well making the ensemble quite warm. You can see the matching juban underneath here: [link]

The fabric bolt seemed to be printed quite stangely. It didn't quite have the right pieces for the collar, so I had to fenagle something into place. As a result one of the horizontal seams on the collar is actually a false seam. It's there only to give the appearance of a proper collar construction. I also decided to sew the collar down half width for ease of wearing. This way I don't have to worry about folding my collar in half when I wear it.

Please excuse the wonky kitsuke on the manequin. It was not a good kitsuke day for me today.

Time to Completion:
14 hours 42 minutes

Ah, I was wondering "is that seriously kimono fabric??" but I guess so ^^ It's seriously funky o_o And the juban is funky too. Highly unusual prints. I'm totally interested in making at least another yukata out of something like this for the summer, lol, it does look really festive and screams "omg beachparty!!"

This is really very beautiful. I love the bright, bold colors but it doesn't appear childish at all. I was wondering how you learned to sew kimono. Did you find one that could not be worn and take it apart? Or have your found some amazing pattern somewhere?

When I first saw it I thought it was Okinawan too.

I watch a show about kimonos from Okinawan ( it's on youtube too) I found it interesting that they use fibries from a plant similar to a banana tree to make the cloth. Also the dyes are mainly prime colors like Red, yellow, and blue. ^_^

That sounds like a neat show! I would love to have an authentic bingata kimono from Okinawa some day. They're so beautiful. Until then, this is my substitute. :)

Thank you! Yes, it actually is kimono fabric. I've seen additional versions of this bolt for sale on yahoo japan. Look up fabric with the keywords Bingata and you'll probably find something similar. The primary reds, yellows and blues are pretty common with this style.

Thank you very much! It's rather difficult for me to explain how I learned to make kimono - I was mostly self taught. I started with inaccurate western patterns then read somewhere that kimono are made with only rectangles. Using that information I started modifying those patterns. I then started comparing my methods with more traditional patterns I found online and in Japanes sewing guides. I bought my first kimono bolt and just had at it, moved on to karinui and then started unstitching and repairing old kimono. I took detailed notes and gained a lot of insight from that.
