- Lucky in Love
This beauty is not part of my permanent collection, but rather a visitor. This incredible embroidered Meiji uchikake belongs to
and will be appearing in the 2011 Anime North Kimono Display.
This stunning example of Japanese embroidery features shou-chiku-bai: Pine, Bamboo and Plum - the three friends of winter, as well as cranes, crashing waves and tortoises. The tortoises are made to be three dimensional. Each one has glass eyes and has been finished with the most wonderful detail. The cranes are just as lovely; even featuring tiny stitches to add shading around the eyes. I've included many large detail images for you to appreciate the workmanship of this piece.
Being a furisode, this piece was likely worn as part of a wedding ensemble, or at the very least as a show of status by an unmarried woman at formal gatherings. While the majority of the piece in in fantastic condition, insects seem to have gotten to the bottom hem. The damage around the hem is so extensive that kimono may need to be relined simply because of it.
